The digital collection spotlight for October 2013 features the drawing diaries of Larry E. Elsner.
Elsner was a gifted artist and teacher. He was an art professor at Utah State University from 1960 until his death in 1990. As an artist, he was primarily concerned with the process of making sculptural forms. This digital collection allows one to explore Elsner's journals, which not only include his drawings, but also his poetry, travel notes, quotes from other artists, technical notes, and thoughts about his artwork and life. Each journal is like a diary - an intimate record of the most significant experiences, concerns, and ideas of the artist's life.
An exhibition of Elsner's work along with sculptures by Elsner's mentee and current USU assistant professor of art Ryoichi Suzuki is on display in the Merrill-Cazier Library's atrium through December 8, 2013.
